Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.
You’re no doubt familiar with the tune “Chinatown, My Chinatown,” but perhaps not with “It’s Tulip Time in Holland,” written by Richard Whiting. This is a fun and unique record featuring a “street piano” purportedly “played” by Signor “Grinderino” no doubt meant to conjure up an image of an organ grinder. It has been suggested that the instrument is a Bruder brand band organ, but whatever it is, it’s a delightful sound. There are no birthday salutes on this week’s program but composer Gerhard Groitzsch get his own segment anyway. He even has another of his compositions played in the first segment to start off the show. In other segments we’ll have some songs about debutantes, we’ll take a musical trip to the Netherlands, hear some college fight songs, have a vocabulary lesson and do some wandering. There’s lots of great music and interesting information (perhaps a little too much information in the case of Amou Haji!) so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and be magically transported back to an earlier–and we think better–musical era. Just click the link above to instantly listen streaming online and/or download for listening at your convenience.
THANKS FOR LISTENING!
