Oceana Roll Sheet Music
Oceana Roll Sheet Music

Welcome to Glenn Robison’s Rapidly Rotating Records, bringing you vintage music to which you can’t *not* tap your toes, from rapidly rotating 78 RPM records of the 1920s and ’30s.

The Oceana Roll is one of my favorite songs. It was written in 1911 by Lucien Denny and  Roger Lewis. There are a number of recordings made at the time and I was all set to play one by Arthur Collins when I happened upon a more recent recording and just had to play it instead. It starts off the fourth segment of the show which is all about phobias. In each segment, I play rapidly rotating records having to do with a particular fear or phobia. For example, most everyone know that arachnophobia is the irrational fear of spiders, so if that were the topic of a segment, I might play Fats Wallers’ “Spider and the Fly.” So to what phobia might “The Oceana Roll” refer? You’ll find out in the fourth segment of the show.  In other segments, we’ll hear songs about a particular color, mirrors, buttons, and some songs with long, one-word titles. There are at least a couple of records being heard on the show for the first time. There’s lots of great music and interesting information so set aside an hour with your favorite beverage and be magically transported back to an earlier–and we think better–musical era.
